Filters we have not built

There is no religion, caste, community or region filter in this product. Not hidden behind a setting, not switched off by default, not sitting in the database waiting to be turned on. The fields do not exist, so no search can use them and no listing can carry them.

This is deliberate and it is not up for negotiation with advertisers. “Only vegetarians” used as a proxy for caste, “preferably from our community”, “same faith preferred” and “North Indians only” are all the same request wearing different words, and all of them are refused.

What counts as a discriminatory listing

A listing or message breaches this policy if it excludes people on the basis of:

• Religion, caste, sub-caste, community, gotra or surname
• Region, mother tongue, state of origin or nationality
• Race, colour or ethnicity
• Marital status, or being a “bachelor” where that is used as a slur
• Sexual orientation or gender identity
• Disability, or a health condition
• Pregnancy, or having children
• Age, except where a genuine age-restricted tenancy applies
• Occupation, where it stands in for one of the above

Coded phrasing counts. So does saying it in chat after the listing passed screening. The test is the effect on the person reading it, not whether the words are polite.

Preferences we do allow, and why

Sharing a home is not the same as letting one. Some preferences are about how a kitchen or a flat actually runs, and those are legitimate:

• Diet as kitchen practice— “the kitchen is vegetarian” is a rule about the kitchen. “Only vegetarians by community” is not, and is removed.
• Smoking, pets, guests, sleep hours, tidiness — day-to-day compatibility, which is what the matching questions are for.
• Gender, in shared accommodation — women-only and men-only houses are permitted. This reflects how shared housing works in India and is a narrow exception, not a loophole for anything above.

Women-only listings are hidden from male accounts entirely. They are not merely filtered out of results — the accounts they are not for cannot open, search or message them.

How this is enforced

1. Before it goes live. Every listing is screened for coded and exclusionary language before it is published, including edits made after approval.
2. On report. Anyone can report a listing, a profile or a message. Reports raised from a chat carry the messages with them, so you never have to explain twice or screenshot anything.
3. Every report reaches a person, and we aim to respond within 24 hours.
4. Outcomes. A first breach usually means the listing comes down and the advertiser is told exactly why. Repeat or deliberate breaches end the account. We do not refund paid features on an account removed under this policy.

Landlords and agents

Advertising on FlatJugaad means accepting this policy for every enquiry you receive through it — including the ones you decline. You may not ask a prospective housemate for their caste, community, religion or gotra, whether in an advert, in chat, or on a call arranged through this platform. Doing so ends your ability to advertise here.

Where else you can go

This policy is our own standard and does not replace your legal rights. Depending on the facts, housing discrimination in India may engage constitutional protections under Articles 14, 15 and 21, state rent and tenancy legislation, the Rights of Persons with Disabilities Act 2016, or the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act 1989. You may also raise a complaint with your State Human Rights Commission or the National Human Rights Commission. We will provide the records we hold to support a complaint you bring.

Use the report link on any listing, profile or chat — that is the fastest route and it brings the context with it. If you would rather write to us, or you are reporting something you have already left the platform over, email grievance@flatjugaad.in.
